A Kundli, also known as a Janam Kundli or birth chart, is a detailed astrological chart that maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and lunar nodes at the exact moment and location of your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Kundli is considered a cosmic blueprint that reveals your personality traits, strengths, challenges, and the trajectory of your life across different areas such as career, relationships, health, and spiritual growth.

The Kundli is divided into twelve houses, each representing a specific area of life. The first house relates to your self and physical appearance, the seventh house governs marriage and partnerships, the tenth house represents career and public life, and so on. The planets placed in these houses, along with the zodiac signs they occupy, create a unique pattern that astrologers interpret to provide guidance and predictions.

To generate an accurate Kundli, three pieces of information are essential: your date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. The time of birth is particularly important because even a difference of a few minutes can shift the Ascendant (Lagna), which changes the entire structure of your chart and the houses that planets occupy.

Once your Kundli is generated, it reveals your Rashi (Moon sign), Nakshatra (lunar constellation), Lagna (Ascendant), and the placement of all nine Vedic planets across the twelve houses. Advanced readings also include the Dasha system, which outlines the planetary periods that govern different phases of your life, and divisional charts like the Navamsa (D9) which provides deeper insights into marriage and partnerships.

In Indian culture, Kundli matching before marriage is a deeply respected tradition. The Ashtakoot Milan system compares the birth charts of two individuals across eight dimensions, producing a compatibility score out of 36 Gunas. A higher score suggests greater harmony between the couple in areas like temperament, emotional connection, physical compatibility, and overall life prospects together.

Beyond the Guna score, Kundli matching also checks for specific Doshas such as Manglik Dosha, Nadi Dosha, and Bhakoot Dosha. These are specific planetary conditions that traditional astrology considers important for marital harmony. Understanding these factors helps families make informed decisions and, where necessary, explore remedies that the Vedic tradition prescribes.
